Winter RV Cover Care: A Storage Inspection Checklist

Putting on an RV cover is the start of winter storage care, not the final step. Periodic checks help you notice loose straps, rubbing fabric and moisture before a small issue becomes harder to manage. Use this checklist alongside the instructions supplied with your cover and RV.

Before installation: start clean and dry

Check the RV exterior and cover for grit, debris and damage. Let both dry before installation. Identify sharp corners and protruding fittings, and protect contact points as instructed. Do not pull fabric over an unprotected sharp edge.

Install only in suitable weather and use safe access methods. Do not climb onto a covered roof or work from an unstable ladder. Keep the RV parked and unoccupied while covered, and do not run equipment whose exhaust or ventilation could be obstructed.

After installation: check the fit

  • Confirm the cover is positioned correctly, with access panels and vents aligned as intended.
  • Secure the supplied straps according to the instructions, without excessive tension.
  • Look for loose fabric that can flap against fittings.
  • Check that protective guards stay in place and buckles are properly fastened.

Recheck after the fabric has settled and after significant wind. If the fit repeatedly shifts, review the size and installation rather than tightening the straps indefinitely.

During storage: inspect contact points and moisture

Look closely at corners, ladder areas, gutter spouts, seams and strap attachment points. Watch for abrasion, tears, loose stitching or an area under unusual tension. Take a photo if you notice a change so you can compare it at the next visit.

Check inside the RV for dampness and follow the vehicle manufacturer's storage ventilation guidance. Breathable fabric does not guarantee a dry interior. Investigate condensation or water entry rather than assuming the cover alone will resolve it.

After snowfall or ice, assess conditions from a safe position and follow your RV manufacturer's snow-management guidance. Do not climb onto the cover, pull frozen fabric or use sharp tools against it. Arrange professional help when safe removal is not possible.

Cleaning: use a gentle approach

Follow the care label first. For routine dirt, gently rinse or spot-clean with water; where permitted, use a mild soap and rinse thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemicals, aggressive scrubbing and high-pressure cleaning unless the manufacturer explicitly allows them. Let the cover air-dry completely before folding it. Covercraft's RV cover cleaning guidance also emphasizes gentle cleaning and drying; instructions for your particular cover take priority.

When you find damage

Reduce the source of rubbing or strain before reinstalling the cover. Use a supplied repair kit only as directed, and contact support for larger damage or uncertainty. Do not assume an adhesive patch is suitable for every fabric or structural seam.

Lanceton RV cover product pages describe a one-year replacement warranty for material or manufacturing quality issues. Keep your purchase details and clear photos, and contact support for assessment; not every type of damage is necessarily a quality issue.

At the end of storage

Remove the cover carefully, keeping dirty surfaces away from clean ones. Inspect, clean and dry it, then store it in a clean, dry place away from sharp objects. Make a note of any repair or sizing issue before the next season.
